I was driving along Zapote road in Alabang when this huge water-truck cut me off. At the back of the truck it was written with bold letters (and I sh!t you not)…

LIBRENG TUBIG
HANDOG NI ALDRIN SAN PEDRO AT FAMILIA

Free water
A gift from Aldrin San Pedro and family

I later found out that Aldrin was the mayor in town and that the water was all paid for with tax payer’s money to be distributed to the poor. And that he was making a profit out of it too, because the company hired to do all the water-pumping and distribution is owned entirely by the mayor himself at unreasonably sky-high prices.

Street-lights… a project of Mayor Yadda-yadda.
Free anti-rabies vaccination, brought to you by Councillor Yadda-yadda.

The best of them all and I’m not making this up…
“Free transportation to and from the cemetary… a gift from Congressman Iforgothisname”.

It’s everywhere!
I know they’re just making excuses so they can do their campaigning ahead of time. But do you think there’s hope for change in reversing this banana-republic style of self glorifying behaviour of politicians in the near future? Does the common Filipino really believe that these politicians are spending money out of their own pockets or are they fully aware of the stench of this manner of false self-advertisement? Does it work come election-time?
Well, I “let them” do it?
I assume those politicians steal tax payer money too, because I “let them”.

While we’re at it, I also “let” hurricane Katrina ravage New Orleans and that’s why all those people died.

Oh wait! I also let the sun to rise and that’s why it’s so bright at day.
Well, I’ll leave the world saving part to you. You seem to be such an expert at it. Much like Jenna Jameson is to her line of work.
Oh and Well…

I work for an organization that is recklessly spending hundreds of thousands of pesos right now in Makati on booze, discos, concerts, food, shopping and hotel bills.

“a project of congressman so and so.”
“another priority project of mayor so and so.”
“your taxes are working for you from senator so and so.”
“kalsada natin, alagaan natin from smole.”

apparently they forgot that we are the ones paying taxes and paying their salaries.**

if you spend millions in campaign ads then where will you get the money to build your mansions, buy your expensive cars, finance your childrens education, buy jewelries, travel overseas,…

i think senator trillanes would be the least corrupt senator because he was not able to campaign but was given enough media exposure for free.

I just copied my answer from the link below. I think int kinda fits your question. At least it is somewhat connected to your question.

“We”…well not all of us, but many of us… Idolize politicians and give the a “god” status, because the “masa” is simply stupified with nonsense TVshows and political propaganda that should be common sense. You gave a perfect example…”free water”?!? We paid for it with OUR taxes, so I believe I already “pre-payed” for it.

I still have to meet the Politician who gives away freebees. If you foun one, please let me know.

“Stop the stupid TV (Eat BUlaga, Wowowee…) shows and start educating the masses about the corruption. It is right under their noses, but the masses are still cheering on and voting for the politicians, only so they can get 50-100 bucks and a BIG pile of empty promises.
Stop the bullsh*t stupid biased news (TV Patrol) and focus on the real problems. I don’t need to know how “great” our president is, ‘cuz she isn’t… I don’t care which celebrity goes to bed with which Basketball player. Thats what sensationNews are there for, not the “serious” news.
First and foremost People MUST be educated on what is REALLY going on in the Philippines.”

Unfortunately I think that this false advertising does have the desired affect in getting the populace to cast their votes favourably.
This misleading and dishonest attitude doesn’t only apply to Filipino politicians. I have noticed two Yappers who try to make out that they donate a considerable amount of money and time to the betterment of ordinary Filipino’s.

UNLIKE YOU UN-WELL I do donate MY OWN hard earned money to help people in the Philippines you Pompous, Self Opinionated Oaf, admittedly it isn’t $2.8million but it is MY OWN MONEY.
I doubt very much whether you understand the meaning of “noble”

PT don’t let that PSOO get to you. We have to show some pity and compassion to him. After all he is using $2.8million of other people’s money to try and buy some friends but it doesn’t seem to be working to well.
p.s. I hear that 10 chickens, 2 pigs and 1 dog unexplainably died in Occidental Mindoro and that the fruit of 5 coconut trees all dropped and a corn crop withered in Cebu is this your doing.

Ahhh, life in the PI. Ain’t it just miserable?

I hate seeing pictures of PGMA most of all.

They do it probably because the uneducated/uninformed would believe they are donating their own money or they are actually doing something useful.

Sad really. When it’s the middle-class people who are losers in this. It’s our taxes. And yet our votes aren’t enough to let the less corrupt and evil politicians win.

I wish they would make a law banning those things. If politicians do a good job, I’m sure word would get around. And there would be no need to advertise.

    *sigh

Politics is not my forte but I’d give you my 2 cents worth. To my mind, politicians should only exist during election time. After that, they should either be statesmen (if elected) or back to being actors or whatever (if they lose). That’s the problem with most of our politicos (people who are good in making promises; people who can sing or dance their way to the hearts of the electorate), they are clueless of what it takes to be true statesmen (officials who know what it means to serve the populace and uphold their mandate). Unfortunately, in Philippine politics (as in other areas), professionalism seems non-existent.

  8. Well

…because you and other Filipinos LET THEM…..lemme expound on that….every pinoy knows what the problem is, you talk about it to death but you guys never unite to really do something about it…lots of talk and no walk make the pols bold enough to get away with WHATEVER they want. it’s that simple really.

PT – not enough people care over there. case in point, you’re spending a fortune in booze while literally a few steps away are 1000’s of starving people who wouldn’t mind an insignificant handout from you….and yet you wonder why the politicians say and do at will without fearing that their own people will rise up against them. not enough people care over there.

PS- and yes biggie c, as hard as it be for you and select others here to fathom, i indeed do work for those noble causes. it doesn’t make me noble–but it sure feels good. you should try it sometime, kalby.

I work for an organization that spent about $2.8M into the Philippines in 2006 and a little bit more by the end of this year, by way of programs and projects in education and healthcare.

They use projects for publicity. That’s how pathetic our “public servants” have become. That they have to brag about the tiniest waiting shed or trash cans goes to show their insecurity for not doing their real jobs.

    Totally hateful.

I hope somebody comes up with a law wherein an elected official goes straight to jail if he/she fails to deliver all the promises he/she makes during the campaign period.

I agree 100% PT! I saw once a small establishment at the edge of a street with the mayor’s name painted on it. It was big and prominent that I thought it was the street’s name. I looked for the street’s name but it was nowhere to be found. I was in disgust. There’s also a school near us with Mayor Sonny Bel Monte’s logo on it. It was so big, it looked like the school’s logo. Well, thank you guys for doing your job but you don’t have to push yourselves to the people that way.
