HELP! Design Using Lettering!?

I got a theme based, ‘Design the sign for a company called Mapata, which transports goods both over land and oversea. Show how your design might look on the side of a truck.’

My questions are:

1/ Is this a logo?
2/ If this is a logo, what can I include in it?
3/ It says how might the design appear on the side of a truck, so must I draw an entire truck or only one side of the truck to represent it?
4/ How many colours must I used for this sign?

Thank

    1- I’d take it as a logo

2- Its hard to say because dont know if you have to do it all using typography or just use type as a main focus. If its all type then thats what it has to be, try style up the word Mapata and put it in a shape or something, but if you can incorporate other things into your logo then maybe put like lines under the word that looks like a road leading into waves, just play around with it.

3- Yeah I’d draw just the side of the truck with a crap representation of where the wheels & front would be, than do it again at a different perspective of the truck

4- Most logos have a very maximum 4 colour limit, I’d recommend using 2-3 spot colours.

I think in most cases it would considered to be a logo but I guess it depends because some company’s could have different specific designs and layouts to suit a particular function. So in number order

    1) Possibly a logo but it sounds good to suggest otherwise

    2) Try to keep it basic because its an advert more than anything, the best thing to do would be to have a go at number 3 in the rough stage to experiment with which graphic does that best.

    3) I guess thats your choice its always important to do what makes you feel more comfortable as a designer, I would personally go for a 3 dimensional representation and the side as well because the more you can present a client with the more chance you have of impressing them.

    4) I think that would depend on the budget the company had but putting that to one side I am sure you could design a logo with as many colours as you like mainly because there are many different ways to print and produce signs and I guess its what kind of file the device would handle. I would personally create a CMYK eps Illustrator file for that particular design using about 2 to 3 individual set colours.
You could even go crazy and create a file in photoshop though and output as a tiff avoid web based files such as jpeg. Please use this link to learn more about output options http://prepressforum.com/

Just one tip and thats do your research and look at vans that make the most impact visually and that advertise well. Simple yet effect and even go for creating something symbolic.

Good luck I hope I have helped
