Hey guys,

I’ve ordered a new PC but have a few worries about it…still have time to make amendments to the order as it is still in the “processing phase” (on www.pcspecialist.co.uk).

My qualms are…

Is the power supply going to be enough?

Is the graphics card going to be good enough (bearing in mind the processor and RAM) to play games such as Empire: Total War and Sims 3 at a decent spec? I could upgrade to the 9600 GT 1GB card for an extra £30 but would that be compatible/work at optimum levels with this PC I’m ordering?

Is the monitor I’m ordering going to do justice to these games?

The system is:

Processor (CPU): Intel® Core™2 Duo E7400 (2 X 2.80GHz) 1066Hz FSB/3MB L2 Cache

Memory (RAM): 4GB CORSAIR XMS2 800MHz (2×2GB)

Motherboard: ASUS® P5N73-AM: DDR2, S-ATA II, 1 x PCI-E x16, 2 PCI, etc

Operating System: Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium 64 bit Edition + SP1, CD & License

USB Options: 6 x USB 2.0 PORTS (4 REAR + 2 FRONT) AS STANDARD

Memory – Hard Disk: 160GB SERIAL ATA II HARD DRIVE WITH 8MB CACHE (7,200rpm)

CD/DVD Drive: 22x DUAL LAYER LIGHTSCRIBE DVD WRITER ±R/±RW/RAM

Graphics Card: 1024MB GEFORCE 9500GT PCI Express + DVI + TV-OUT

Sound Card: ONBOARD 6 CHANNEL (5.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD)

Network Facilities: ONBOARD 10/100 LAN PORT

Memory Card Reader: INTERNAL 52 IN 1 CARD READER (READS XD, MS, CF, SD, etc)

Power Supply & Case Cooling: 350W Dual Rail PSU + 120mm Case Fan

Processor Cooling: STANDARD CPU COOLER

Monitor: 17 Inch Wide TFT Silver/Black 1440 x 900 8MS, D-Sub

Keyboard & Mouse: Logitech® Internet Keyboard + Hotkeys (Black) (£6)

Speakers: LOGITECH S150 2.0 DIGITAL USB SPEAKER SYSTEM

Advice would really be appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris
I have it on good authority that the 2.8 ghz core 2 duo is a good processor for what I’m after?

Also with regards to the hard disk I don’t intend to be installing much on my computer, just standard office apps and a couple of games (Empire/Sims), therefore I opted to stick with 160GB.

And in terms of the video card I’ve been told, with the RAM and processor, that the 9500GT will be fine for Empire but I need to know if the 9600GT will be a worthy investment with regards to top spec on these games???

I would get a bigger hard drive… more than what it has now. 500GB hard drives are SO cheap now… even a 320GB would be better.
As for processing and GPU power, you’re good. I think the ONLY disadvantage bout the GPU is the lack of an HDMI port in the event that you ever wanted to hook an LCD TV to it. But that’s not a big deal breaker.

Get a better video card (better than the 9600gt also).
Get a better power supply (350w will probably cut it, but it’ll be close).
