Hands down, the Gateway. the Dell is a pretty crappy computer. the Gateway probably cost more, but when you buy a computer, you always want to buy a system a little better than what yo are looking for, to “future proof” yourself. Once she starts she might start to want more out of it , and if you get the faster one to begin with, you don’t have to buy a new computer every couple of years.

    Hi Rita:

Instead of Dell or Gateway, I would recommend something like this (check the link) it is just 30 dlls ahead of your budget, but the brand and build is by far much better than the two options you say.

One of the many advantages it has, is that you can get an upgrade coupon to get Windows 7 at the time of release.
