On my way home at 1am, I spotted a cloud of red and blue flashing lights. When I got closer, I counted eight police vehicles with just ONE vehicle pulled over at the front of the line. The only people around were police officers who were searching the vehicle. By their feet and outside the back door, there was also a long, thin object wrapped on cloth. I have no idea what it could have been. I’m just wondering what could have possibly happened?

It could be a wanted/dangerous fugitive, there could have been weapons found in the vehicle, there could have been a bomb threat (although unlikely as you did not mention bomb squad, and they would have blocked off the road) or maybe there was a box of donuts in the trunk.

The guy who drove the car might be a criminal or drug dealer ( wanted ), the thing you saw on the floor might also be drug or else, weapon..

More than one patrol car is needed when the driver of the car being pulled over is suspected being armed and dangerous.

True story: We had an incident in our town last month or so when there was a grocery store robbery. The robber held the clerks at gunpoint, took all the money, and then drove away in a black truck. All the police were looking for a black truck. The next day, a man in a black truck was pulled over with 10 police car converging on him. This man was not the robber because at 45 miles away the real robber was caught by another group of police on patrol at the same time.

The police will call for back-up as necessary if they think the person they pull over pose a threat. They will take all the necessary precaution to protect themselves. The man they mistakenly pulled over with 10 cars returned home unharmed. He was shaken but not stirred. It seems like overkill to pull one car with that many police cars, but consider the alternative, if the robber was carrying guns and there was only one patrol car, there would have been a shootout and somebody would have died. With lots of police cars, the cop uses intimidation by number technique to warn the bad guys that they weren’t going to get away.

A long, thin object wrapped in cloth could easily be Rifle. The subject may have a record of violence, which the police would know by running his license plate, or he threatened someone and the police were called to him or the car was stolen.
There’s simply strength in numbers. A violent offender like a gang member could easily have a couple gang members up the street who wouldn’t think twice about blowing away a cop who pulled over there buddy with stuff in the car! If there’s 10 cops then nobody’s blowing away anybody tonight.
    Order in the street.

I am beginning to suspect that cops have nothing better to do. Cops used to be hero’s and fight bad guys, now cops pull over soccer moms for rolling through stop signs. Instead of seeing cops patrolling ghetto neighborhoods, you are more likely to see 7-8 cops pulling over someone for a traffic violation.
