Should I use a car seat on a plane ride?

I am traveling from California to Florida by plane. I am going w/my 3 month, 2 y.o. (who would be in the car seat) and a 7 y.o. I am putting the 3 month old in a moby wrap but I am not sure if it is worth trying to carry the car seat or if it would make that much of a difference. I am pretty sure the 2 y.o. will figure out how to undo her buckle….

A car-seat is a MUCH safer way for the little ones to travel. You will need to purchase a seat for the 2-year-old anyway and you should put the child in the car-seat since you are already paying for the seat. For the 3-month-old, even though you can fly her for cheap or even possibly free by carrying her in your lap, it’s not worth the potential risk to the child. She would be restrained only by the moby wrap if you have an emergency or even just moderate rough air; the wraps are not designed to keep the baby in place if there’s bouncing and bumping around. She could easily be hurt. I’ve actually seen this happen on two occasions. So purchase the seat for the infant and bring the car-seat for both of the younger ones. This has the advantages of getting you extra carry-on bag allowances, as each child will get their own carry-on and “personal item” allowed, plus will leave your hands free to care for all of the children. If you have a double-stroller where the car-seats can fit, use that to get your children to the gate, and the airline will stow it underneath the plane for you for free, returning it to you at the landing gate (not baggage claim).

It depends. Your 2 year old will be supervised the whole flight by either you or the flight attendant, so they’ll definitely see the child take off the seat belt. Then, they or you can put it back on for them.

A car seat is safer for a child to travel in. If you have one that you use in the car, you can bring it, but most children of at least 2 sit in their seats without car seats.

    Have a great trip!

It does make her “think” she can’t move around and that is pretty freakin’ helpful! I can’t wait for you to leave so I can play video games w/ your husband! :-) Have a safe trip!
