Why would he do this? His name is Jason, but he says “Jason is not here, I am Sam” he will get upset when you do not call him Sam. Then he says something like “It is Christmas and Sam is going to give you a present” and he wraps a car in his blanket and gives it to us. Why is he doing this and should we encourage it?

I think that sounds adorable. I love little kids. Why would this be a problem? He’s playing.

As a mom I can see why you would be bothered by this. If my DD (she’s 2) was doing that I would be a tad worried and start to wonder. I think that its okay, that his imagination is running wild. But I would ask him, “Hey Sam where is Jason?” or ask ‘Sam’ why he likes to give gifts. Its probably nothing to worry about, but just ask some simple questions to let you have a glimpse in his eyes, and perhaps that will give you some comfort. Another thing is that he may know someone at preschool or daycare named Sam and/or maybe saw something about giving a gift to someone and just put 2 and 2 in his head. Or maybe he saw something on TV. Its probably nothing to worry about. As long nothing bizarre or out of the ordinary happens, then your son is probably just having fun playing and letting his mind run free!

He is just being imaginative. Allow and encourage him to be creative. My son was 4 yrs. old when he created his alter-ego Pollen. I told him that it was fine to be Pollen anywhere but school. So once we pulled into the preschool parking lot he would become himself again until class was over. There’s nothing wrong with a little imagination. I think it’s cute. All of our friends understand that sometimes Dylan is Pollen and Pollen has super powers.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it. He is just being creative. My 3 1/2 yr old tells me he is not Noah, but Diego. Oh well, I just say “Ok Diego come eat lunch” or whatever. Eventually he forgets but I don’t think that its anything t worry about. Play with him and pretend t be someone else. Who knows, might be fun!!
