If you are about to crash, you will never see it coming. Best position is drunk up to the eyeballs. Or, not paying attention to the road.(looking at the scenery instead)

That way, you body is loose and you are like a rag doll. Rag dolls never break. The rigid plastic ones do. Same concept

That is why drunks can walk away from head on collisions…because they do not tense up.

If you have time, you should simply lean back firmly in your seat. Do NOT push on the steering wheel with your arms or press on the floorboards with your legs. All that that will do is cause broken limbs. Wrapping your arm around the seat belt would likely result in a broken arm, or worse.

Leaning to the side would likely increase the injury as you would not be properly restrained by the belt or protected by the airbag.

Vehicle safety systems (airbags, seat belts, head restraints, etc.) are designed to provide the best protection while you are seated in a normal upright position with your arms and legs in front of you.

If you have all that time, why not just drive around whatever you’re going to hit? Let’s say you’re going 60mph and it’ll take three measly seconds to do all that. Fair enough? 5,280 feet divided by 60 seconds equals 88 feet a second. Times three seconds is 264 feet. Jeez, think you can drive around something in 264 feet? Even at 30mph it’s still 132 feet to maneuver. You’d really have to screw up to hit something with that much time to react.

To do anything with the seat belt other than wear it is defeating it’s purpose. It’s a passive device, you wear it and let it do it’s job. Which is to keep you just far enough away from the airbag that it doesn’t kill you when it goes off.

That sounds like a Borne Ultimatum move. Unfortunately, that only works in the movies. If you think you have the time to react to your car sliding into a traffic barrier your wrong.
Being that we drive the same way we walk, our senses are good at walking speed not at driving speed, the best way to survive is to all together avoid the situation that might lead to a collision. As an ex NY EMT I can say that the force that transfers to your body is immense. Even in a low speed accident. My advice, wear your belt properly and have your seat and head rest in the correct position.

No. The seatbelt should be fitted snuggly on your pelvic before you set out to drive. Further stretching of the belt is done by the pretentioner mechanism, if it exits. Your only solution to reduce the force of collision is to remove your hands from the wheel, brake with the right foot and ease the left foot, while keeping it on the footrest. However, this is completly not practical since your natural, instinctive reaction would be to push yourself back into the seat, stretching the muscles in your limbs (arms, feet).
