Recently I posted a question on how to get my children to behave. I took all what everyone had to say and started a rewards system from a software program online, My Rewards Board. In the few days we have been using it, my kids are great the love getting the online stickers and the sounds it uses and teh fact that is is custom to each child. However my 3 year old is not using it, just my 6 and 4 year old. I have some ideas of what they can “save” points for, as they seem to like the idea to “cash in” to get something like going to the pool with just me, but what other Free, or Cheap ideas does anyone one else have that I might have overlooked. Also has a rewards system like this where you “save” points worked for anyone else? And what problems might I face with using this new system?

You could let them choose what you make for dinner, have a movie night, go to the park, stay up 15 minutes later, maybe go to the dollar store and see what fun cheap toys you can find like a princess crown, a truck, some crayons, etc. and put them in a reward jar with 10 points for a reward or something.

It will end up just being a phase…and they will get bored with it. You need to make sure you have other back up plans..what works for me is, I have a footlocker in my closet. When I am out in my day, I see little gifts, toys, bubble baths, things that match their rooms and so on. I keep them gift wrapped in the footlocker. When they do something that suprises me like helping their sister with homework without asking. I will reward them with picking one item out of the box. And of course its a surprise. If all three get a present on the same day, they are only allow to trade once with their sisters.

It teaches them that ..they never know when they will be rewarded so always do the right thing.

My son and daughter-in-law use this method for their seven year old. I have also seen teachers use it with success. It works very well for my grandson, much better than threats and punishments. There were no problems.

How about a special place setting at dinner time…. the nice dish, pretty placemat, alittle place card, cloth napkin, a flower in a little vase…. and of course, a special dessert.

That sounds great… maybe just to buy them a toy or to go out to eat.. kids love that.. or having a date night one on one with a kid will make them happy my mother had a system like that.. we loved to go out and eat one on one!
Also ask your kids for ideas, after all it is their prize/day with you, ask them they’ll be happy if you ask them! They have great ideas!

    I hope this helps!

cashing in points to pick out a few toys at the dollar store, helping mom bake cookies or treats, letting them pick a movie to watch.
Let them plan what they want for dinner- i would have rules, like no ice cream til after dinner… so you don;t get chips and cake for dinner :)

Some problems might be- if they think some behavior is worth more than others, making it too easy.

Also another problem might be they expect to get something everytime they do something or behave well, teaching them that they should only do stuff if they get somtehing in return

    Sounds great! Good Luck

Rewards are, to a large extent, bribery, but it’s way better than beating on your kids.

Children can be taught to behave well by concentrating on the underlying REASONS for behaving a certain way. Sure, for a two or three year old, the reasoning has to be simple, but generally so are their misdeeds at that age.

I suppose one redeeming way to use rewards is to tie it not only to the child behaving well, but also to the child being able to tell you the reasons that he/she should behave that way.

well i have never used anything like that before but i have some ideas for you. You can take them to like a dollar store and let them pick out a toy on there own or go to a park for and hour, rent a movie, go out for a dinner at mc donalds or for ice cream. just a few ideas for you

A three year old is NOT old enough to understand ‘rewards’. Just give the child tasks to do and go on with life.
